Since 2002, Kanji Segawa has choreographed and taught for both ballet and modern educational institutions, performing arts schools and universities throughout the U.S. Segawa’s choreography, with diverse styles and vocabulary, has the ability to adapt to all ages and levels in both ballet and modern dance. His works have been performed at numerous events and occasions including university performances, ballet competitions, college auditions, Regional Dance America (RDA), and National Young Arts Foundation.
From 2003-11, Segawa worked extensively as a teaching artist at American Ballet Theatre, teaching modern and choreographing contemporary works for the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School (JKO), the Summer Intensive Program in NYC and the Make a Ballet Program. In January 2011, the JKO School performed his ballet Toward the Light at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C as part of The Presidency of John F. Kennedy: A 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Since 2006, Segawa has been working with Metropolitan Ballet Academy in Jenkintown, PA, creating many original contemporary works as well as story ballets including Peter Pan (2007) and Hansel & Gretel (2009) for the company. Segawa's contemporary works were presented multiple times by the company at RDA. In 2013, the company performed Segawa's Toward the Light at Youth America Grand Prix in Philadelphia that honored Segawa as a third-time recipient of the Outstanding Choreographer Award.
Segawa's other teaching and choreographic credits include: The Ailey School for the Ailey/Fordham B.F.A Program, Certificate Program Repertory Ensemble and Ailey Camp. University of Richmond, Texas Christian University, Brown University, Long Island University, Mark Morris Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, Booker T Washington School of the Arts, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, and Center of Creative Arts (COCA), among others.
